PGA Tour and Champions Tour winner Craig Robert Stadler (born June 2, 1953) is an American professional golfer who has amassed an impressive collection of victories on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour. Stadler was born in the city of San Diego. His father began teaching him to golf when he was four years old, and he quickly showed a natural aptitude for the game. Stadler went at La Jolla High School, which is located in San Diego. During his college years at the University of Southern California, where he was a teammate of future PGA Tour champions Mark Pfeil and Scott Simpson, he won the 1973 United States Amateur Championship.
Stadler was named to the All-American squad all four years of his collegiate career, making the first team his sophomore and junior years and the second team his freshman and senior years. Stadler graduated from college in 1975 and began working as a professional in 197In 1980, Stadler won his first two PGA Tour tournaments, the Bob Hope Desert Classic and the Greater Greensboro Open, marking his professional debut. His most successful season came in 1982, when he claimed four victories on the PGA Tour, including the Masters, following a playoff with Dan Pohl.
After winning the British Columbia Open in 2003, Stadler became the first golfer over the age of 50 to win a PGA Tour tournament in 28 years. In all, he won 13 PGA Tour tournaments and represented the United States on the 1983 and 1985 Ryder Cup squads. When Stadler became eligible for the Champions Tour in June 2003, he immediately started competing. His most significant accomplishments were during his first two years of eligibility; he was the tour’s top money winner in his first full year on the circuit, in 2004, for example.
On September 15, 2010, Stadler had complete left hip replacement surgery in Los Angeles, which severely curtailed his playing time for the foreseeable future. Stadler is known as “The Walrus” in the art world because of his large size and thick moustache, which have earned him the nickname. He currently resides in the city of Denver, Colorado. Kevin, his son, is also a champion on the PGA Tour. Gary Stadler, his brother, is a music artist who has achieved success on the Billboard charts. Stadler stated that the 2014 Masters Tournament, which was his 38th and in which he shared the stage with Kevin, would be his last appearance.
